psychotherapy is…

  • Personal

You’re an individual with your own story. No two psychotherapeutic treatments are the same, because no two people are the same. Psychotherapy is practiced within the relationship between the two of us, and our relationship is unique and special.

  • open-ended

It’s important to have an idea of where you might want to go in treatment. However, sessions are guided by you, at your own pace. You’re encouraged to speak to whatever is on your mind. I help in making connections, and facilitating insight into feelings and patterns.

  • Depth-oriented

Why are we the way that we are? That question is often complex and there is usually not just one answer. Questions such as these require two people working together to understand the mind of one. I’m interested in what you have to say, what you experience or feel as you’re saying it, and even what you don’t say.

  • Integrative

Minds are complex. There are seemingly infinite reasons as to why people are the way they are. A short list of angles to view psychological difficulties through include personality style, interpersonal dynamics, attachment, defenses, and ways of thinking and feeling.

"The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help."

FAQ

how often do i have to come?

Research has shown that being in psychotherapy once per week for one year is useful for most issues seen on an outpatient basis. I see people either once per week or twice per week depending on symptom presentation and goals.

I do not see patients biweekly or monthly.

How much does psychotherapy cost?

Many insurance companies cover or partially cover the cost of psychotherapy. I always advise prospective patients to speak to their insurance carrier or review their plan so that there are no surprises.

I charge $200 per session. However, your cost may be less with insurance.

I also offer sliding scale fees for those out of network, or those without insurance.

How long are appointments?

Appointments are 55 minutes long.

do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

I offer both in-person and virtual sessions. The office for in-person sessions is located in Detroit, MI.

What are your credentials?

I am a Temporary Limited Licensed Psychologist (TLLP) in the state of Michigan. I am only licensed in the state of Michigan, and am supervised by a Licensed Psychologist (LP). My license number is 6362009643.

I’ve never been in psychotherapy. What can i expect from the first appointment?

During the first appointment I will learn more about you and what brings you to treatment. I will ask about your relationships with family, friends, and significant others. I will try to understand symptoms and difficulties that you are experiencing. We will work together to come up with an idea of what you want out of our time together. This can always be modified or changed as we work and understand more about you.

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy seeks to understand how past experiences relate to the present. We do this by exploring feelings, thoughts, and recurring patterns in a person’s life to facilitate insight. Additionally, there is often an exploration of fantasies, wishes, and fears in order to understand unconscious processes.

The fundamental belief is that it is better to know than to not know. Once feelings, thoughts, and experiences are shared, seen, and understood, we are better able to feel more comfortable with ourselves and share ourselves with others.

DO YOU OFFER EMDR OR BRAINSPOTTING?

I do not at this time.

do you see children or adolescents?

I do not. I see patients ages 18+.

Do you see couples?

I do not at this time.

DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS?

No. I am not a psychiatrist, or a medical doctor. I can provide referrals for psychiatrists in the area.

FREE CONSULTATION

I offer free 15 minute consultations to see if we may be a good fit to work together.

Research has shown that above all else, “fit” or the relationship between the psychotherapist and patient is the highest predictor for psychotherapeutic outcomes. (Yes, even above how a psychotherapist practices.)

It may be hard to gauge “fit” in 15 minutes, which is why I check in during appointments to see how you’re feeling about the work we’re doing.
